Compass by iVogel – directional navigation, speedometer, altimeter, weather and location.

Compass app for iPhone and iPad is a real compass, which shows device’s real-time orientation to magnetic fields. It’s not just a regular compass that shows general directions, but also a great guide during traveling, driving and doing sports. The app takes advantage of sensors of your iPhone or iPad to show your speed while driving, your location and altitude when climbing, running or traveling. Additionally, it provides weather information and displays your current location on Google Maps.

This app has a creative and user-friendly metro style design and simple, comprehensive functionality.

  2. The pointer on compass points to the compass direction but with. + or – 40 degree possible error. That is almost 1/8 the entire compass rose. What is the accuracy of you app? How does one optimize this???

    • Hi Andy,

It could appear when close to magnetic, radio waves, etc.
Simply open the app and perform a single circular motion with the hand that holds the iPhone. If you’re right-handed you need to rotate your wrist 360° degrees from left to right. In the same time, use your fingers to tilt the device. Perform a backward-tilt in the first half of your wrist rotation and change towards an upward move during the final 180° degrees of your wrist rotation.

      Thanks,

  3. Correction. + or – 40 degrees is a possible swing arc of 80 degrees. This is an error is 1/(4.56) of the entire 365 degree compass rose or 22 degrees. The actual error should be 1/10 th of that to be employable. 22 degrees is not acceptable for serious navigation.

Again what is the best accuracy of your compass and how does one optimize it. The rolling ball in a circle does not seem to do much. How does one get the rolling ball display on demand?..

  5. Hi, purchased yr compass for the option of being able to download/save the coordinates lat and long to clipboard. Cannot figure out how to do that though, pls provide a hint. Like others have mentioned, the compass does not appear to be very stable.

    • Hi Ted,

To copy coordinates, you have to long-press coordinates, i.e. touch and wait till copy menu appears.

      Thanks,

    • Hi Andy,

It appeared on application start, whenever not calibrated. But, as said, if the error is too significant, you can try the mentioned technics to re-calibrate.

  6. I like the compass and understand the accuracy, or lack of, a traveling iPad.

I can’t get anything else to do anything, I click on speed, altitude, and not a thing happens. Nothing at all.

Location only rarely does anything, and always puts me in the ocean off the coast of Africa. (I’m in mid USA.)

Looking in my list of apps I dont see it showing up to turn on location services or the like. Settings does not seem to have any adjustments to prevent these options from working?

I’m lost on anything beyond the compass screen working? What it does is nice and the other features look good but do not activate for me?

iPad 4th generation, cell, iOS 7.x.

    • Hi Paul,

It seems the location services are not on. Please go to iPad Settings and find the application in the list.

The “Allow location access” should be set to “While using the App”

      Hope that helps.

      Thanks,

      • Ok, seemed round about to get there, app didnt show up in list until I turned Locations on and off. Was trying but couldn’t get there before, not sure how it got there now.

But anyhow it does work now, thank you, and it was with the Locations deal somehow.

  7. Where I live, the magnetic declination is about 6°. However, when using your app, there is no difference between the magnetic north and true North readings.

    • Hi Chuck,

There is a difference, but it could be really insignificant, when the accuracy is low. Try to calibrate device.

  8. Is it possible to view the gps coordinates or perhaps have an option to switch to the WGS84 Datum that many in the geocaching community use?

        • Hi Canelle,

It is not quite clear what you really meant. You have to save route first in order to view it.

  9. When I first opened app, showed me calibration; however, not able to do at that time
Now can’t get back to screen to calibrate… Any info on this?

    • Hi Ccgreen,

The calibration screen appeared automatically, when device needs calibration. To recalibrate manually:

Simply open the app and perform a single circular motion with the hand that holds the iPhone. If you’re right-handed you need to rotate your wrist 360° degrees from left to right. In the same time, use your fingers to tilt the device. Perform a backward-tilt in the first half of your wrist rotation and change towards an upward move during the final 180° degrees of your wrist rotation.

  12. Here’s a hint; when all else fails, read the instructions. Also, swiping ↔↕, or a long press are commonly used actions among apps. Try it before posting.

  13. In the latest update, when in the map mode, pressing the compass (icon in the upper right) temporarily moves the map but then it snaps back to the original orientation rather than switching back-and-forth between North and current direction.

    • Hi Dan,

It’s a feature rather than bug. In map mode, by default, application tracks the location changes, i.e. always following the location and moves it to the center of screen. Whenever user makes some interactions on map the tracking mode goes off (could be switched back on with arrow button in the upper-left icon). Afterwards you’ll be able to setup the orientation you like.

      Thanks,

    • Hi Andrew,

Could you please make sure that in Settings->Privacy->Location Services menu the iCompass application has a “While Using the App” location access.

      If not please select it.

      Thanks,

      • I tried reinstalling the app and made sure allow location service while using the app is selected. In fact the location arrow shows up and the weather screen reports the right location.

On the map screen, my current location never shows even when I press the arrow.

        Please help

        • I found the solution to my issues. The compass speed, location, altitude worked only after I saved a dummy route once. After the initial “kick” it worked.

It would be really nice to export the route to google map for example. Thanks for the great app.

    • Hi Mike w,

      We really appreciate it!

Regarding weather, there is a problem with Yahoo public weather service currently. Yahoo closed it. So, the workaround will be available within next update soon.
